Did you know that your body is a potential carrier of generational trauma? Our body physically manifests experiences and feelings of our ancestors, making it so that the past and the present are not so far away from one another.  

Reframing HERstory Art Foundation is welcoming youth from all walks of life, living in Gelderland, to apply to participate in a workshop on the 23rd of July in Arnhem. The goal of the workshop is to involve a broad, primarily young audience (students and creatives from the age of 16), and to provide them with tools to delve into the importance of the social theme of researching the colonial and slavery-past. 

Workshops

The workshop is imagined upon the theatre, music and dance production 'Schitterende Schaduw/Radiant Shadow'. The play is inspired by a confronting experience of  a black girl witnessing an 18th century portrait of a countess. She is looking at the painting with a lot of admiration for the beauty of the countess, who has the same skin colour as her. 

'Schitterende Schaduw/Radiant Shadow' translates that experience within a narrative through a dance, music performance, the experiences and relations between a household, a count, a countess and their son and 2 servants.

The workshop will offer both a physical experience, as well as guide participants to develop insights and self research:

  • To embody roles, to take on forms and postures of the characters and their physical journey e.g. on a slave ship, without space to move. What would it be like to be far away from home in a different land and climate, when you would have to work all day. Or, on the other hand, how would it be to live in great luxury and everything is being done for you, or everyone looks up to you? 
  • To experience a range of art forms: to rehearse and study important scenes and themes from the performance with the students. Preparation will take place through group conversations in a careful and secure emotional environment (method of the Keti Koti Tafel).
  • To become aware that the colonial era is the blueprint of our (contemporary) ideas, mental patterns and prejudices, through (self)reflection (which patterns and prejudices do I carry). According to the age of the students. Students could be asked to write a follow-up essay to structure and reflect on what they have learned.
