Labour is a recurring theme in the work of Olu Oguibe (1964, Nigeria). His interest in this subject can be traced back to a portrait of Oguibe's father from 1983 titled Farmer George, bearing the phrase "There is dignity in labour". Oguibe is a Professor of Art and African-American Studies at the University of Connecticut and a senior fellow at the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at New School and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. Oguibe has played a significant role in the study of postcolonial theory and New Information Technology Studies. An acclaimed poet, Oguibe has published three volumes of his writings including A Gathering Fear (1992).
